Know how to respond to “Why should we hire you?” It is a fundamental task to perform before presenting yourself for an interview. This is so because the question appears in almost all instances between recruiters and candidates. Knowing the motivations of a collaborator is the most important thing for any company.
“Why should we hire you?” It is a slogan that usually generates confusion in an applicant. Therefore, it is necessary to take a moment to prepare before the interview. This includes researching the company, knowing who they are and what they do, how they do it, and what values are important to them.
In that sense, it is not just a question of being able to answer the question “why should we hire you?” but also to be able to tell one’s own story. Our trajectory and the work that led us to where we are are basic data that we must transmit in an interview. But in reality, we should aim to convey much more than that.
A job interview is about a meeting between two strangers. The recruiter tries to get as many conclusions as possible about the candidate. For this reason, everything that cannot be told will go unnoticed or, it will be left to the recruiter’s interpretation.
Knowing how to answer interview questions correctly is always important. This point, in particular, is key to successfully going through a selection process. In this post we tell you what are the most frequent questions that are asked in interviews, in addition to “Why should we hire you?”
It is that to assure your recruiter or future employer that you are ideal for the role they seek to fill, it will be essential that you know how to explain two things. For one thing, why are you interested in that work?. We have dealt with this question -which is another of the answers that you should think about before going to an interview- in this post.
On the other hand, you should think about your qualities, abilities and experiences. Why are you interested in working with them, and what led you to apply for the position. You can articulate starting your answer with: “I am interested in this job, in this company, because…” and then give at least three reasons why you want to work there.
Reason # 1 – Professional Fit
Your first reason should always show that you are fit in terms of professional competencies:
“I am interested in this job because I can see that in this role, my skills will pay off for them. Because of this, I will also benefit personally, professionally and financially. If I can come, solve problems and achieve your goals, it will be a great future for me.
This part of your answer to Why should we hire you? It lets them know that you are excited about what you are going to be able to accomplish for them, while still emphasizing that they are the winners of the negotiation.
Reason # 2 – Cultural Fit
Your second reason also shows your fitness, but in a different way:
“Also, I like the culture of this organization”. I like what I’ve heard and what I’ve been reading about this company, and it seems to fit my personality and my values.
This is a general answer to “Why should we hire you?” So if you can be more specific and name a few things you’ve heard or read about the company you like, it will help your cause. This is an area where your pre-interview research is critical. Some things you may want to look for when researching the company:
Is this a leading company in the field?
Is this company known for cutting edge products and other innovations?
Does this company have a great reputation for customer service?
Is this company known for being a great place to work? (Forbes is famous for its “Best Places to Work” / Great Place To Work lists, but there are many others who compile their own lists.)
Does this company value and / or provide resources for employee development?
Mention the things that really speak to you and your values to show sincerity.
Reason # 3 – Personal Fit
End your answer with something that personalizes a little more, such as one of the following statements:
And, this job is very well located for me. I have always wanted to come to work in this area.
“And, this job is only five minutes from my house, so avoiding the trip I have now will be a wonderful thing.”
And, I’ve always used these products, and I love them. I am very excited to be a part of this.
Say something that gives you another reason of your own for wanting this job.
This response to “Why should we hire you?” it’s a great time to show your enthusiasm for work. It’s very attractive to employers, and it gives them one more reason to hire you.
At Schmitman HR we believe that job interviews are not and should not be a fixed questionnaire with correct and incorrect answers. However, the reason these questions keep recurring is because they are relevant.
In another publication we already tell you which are the most repeated questions. There are variants and there are more than 50 questions that recruiters ask frequently, – in addition to “Why should we hire you?” Thus, the most important thing is that you take your time to prepare. This means investigating the company, its leaders, and its communication channels.
It is essential that you do not show up for the interview without having read their website to elucidate who they are and what matters to them. If they are formal or relaxed, for example, it will help you to set your presentation and the tone of the conversation. Also, knowing their mission and value will help you connect their dots with your own.
But research does not only mean knowing the company, but also knowing your own work. Be sure of your interests and choose well which parts of your story to highlight, even if they are not specifically traits or work experiences.
Your own story is a part that we often take for granted. However, it is very common that at the end of an interview, a candidate regrets not having recounted some aspect of his life that he overlooked. You have an opportunity to introduce yourself, do not waste it with improvisation: research your future employer and think about why you would be the best collaborator they can select.
